Summer in Marshallton reminds us of the simple pleasures that come from spending time with our neighbors and appreciating the land and history that we all share. The longer days give us the opportunity to walk the familiar paths, gather together, and honor the traditions that have shaped our village for generations. This season has brought us moments to remember, and there is still much to look forward to. As we reflect on recent celebrations and anticipate the return of artists to our village, we remain committed to preserving the spirit and heritage that make Marshallton a place we are proud to call home.

Community Spotlight:

Art in Marshallton

Celebrate art, nature, and community in the heart of Chester County!Join us for the 4th Annual Art in Marshallton: En Plein Air Painting Event, taking place September 25 - 27, when artists will once again set up their easels throughout the Village and surrounding countryside to capture the landscapes, architecture, and historic character that make Marshallton so special.

Enjoy two days of outdoor painting, a lively Quick Draw competition on Saturday evening, and an Art Show & Reception on Sunday afternoon, featuring juried awards by Margaret Winslow, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Delaware Art Museum.

Art in Marshallton celebrates the connection between art, landscape, and preservation, with a portion of event proceeds benefiting the Marshallton Conservation Trust and our work to preserve the history, rural character, and sense of place that define our Village.

History Spotlight:

A Most Patriotic Celebration

On July 19, neighbors and visitors gathered in historic Marshallton for A Most Patriotic Celebration, an afternoon filled with history, music, reflection, and community. As Mark Slouf, President of Friends of Martin’s Tavern, shared, “Unquestionably, the event lived up to its name.”

The day began at Bradford Meeting House with Eugene Hough’s Heritage Flag Ceremony and patriotic music by the Chester County Choral Society, followed by Dare to Declare, a community reading of the Declaration of Independence. The celebration concluded at Martin’s Tavern and Humphry Marshall Historical Park with the Friends of Martin’s Tavern Annual Ice Cream Social, music by Forbes Road Frolic, and the Chester County 250 Traveling Exhibit.

Fittingly, the entire celebration was filmed with the hope that it will become part of the Chester County 250 time capsule, preserving a glimpse of how Marshallton commemorated this historic milestone for generations to come.

Conservation Corner:

Birding in the Parks

West Bradford Township is giving residents a new way to explore our local landscape through Birding in the Parks, a beginner-friendly initiative featuring self-guided birding guides for Shadyside Park, Broad Run Park, and Brandywine Meadows Preserve.

Developed by the Township’s GIS & Environmental Specialist Libby Boulanger, each guide highlights birds that visitors are likely to see and hear along the parks’ trails, pairing simple identification tips with memorable facts. As Boulanger explains, “These guidebooks are a good entry point into learning about the natural world.”

By encouraging us to slow down, look closely, and learn more about the wildlife around us, Birding in the Parks helps strengthen our bond with the land and resources we are entrusted to care for. Together, we can ensure these special places remain vibrant for generations to come.
